Community Respite Care Bed

We are delighted to be able to offer charity funded, free of charge, short term respite in our care home in Corbridge from 1st May 2024.

Our Community Respite Care Bed provides high quality nursing and residential care for those over 65 years of age who live in Northumberland. The service is based in a well appointed room in Charlotte Straker House and is available for those who need extra support for a short period of time.

The service offers:

  • Short term stay for those over 65 years of age
  • Well appointed room with ensuite facilities
  • Delicious and nutritious home cooked meals, snacks and drinks
  • High quality nursing and residential care (dependent on a needs assessment)
  • Access to outings and activities

Some of our respite patients are elderly and frail, others have long term illnesses or disabilities such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease, whilst some are needing a break from looking after themselves at home. Sometimes the carers themselves have had to go into hospital for an operation, and there is no one to look after their dependent relative.

There is a shortage of affordable good quality respite care in our area. Our respite care service is therefore essential to provide a reprieve to hard pressed carers who can gain some respite knowing that their loved ones are being looked after in our high-quality experienced nursing and residential facility.

Our respite care bed is free of charge to the respite resident, receives no local authority support and is funded entirely through donations and grant funding. We would be very grateful for any donations, large or small – if you would like to donate please click here

Why Consider Respite Care?

Some of our respite residents need a period of support as they recuperate from an illness, an operation or an accident; some need increasingly regular help – and the company of others – whilst they still maintain their independent life. It can be an opportunity to enjoy like minded company, meet new people and create friendships, as well as the chance to enjoy a new, stimulating environment.

And for those who are already dependent on daily support at home, it can enable an existing carer, be that a life partner or other family member, to have a short break themselves.

Whatever the situation, the benefits are clear and far-reaching. In fact, the opportunity to experience Charlotte Straker House as a respite visitor often breaks the ice for elderly people and their families who are struggling to come to terms with a future where they are unable to look after themselves.

Before you (or the person you are caring for), checks in at Charlotte Straker House, you’ll be assessed by one of our team. This is so we can fully understand your particular needs and preferences, make you feel welcome and give you the confidence to relax and enjoy your time here.

You will enjoy a well appointed ensuite room, and high quality nursing and residential care (dependent on a needs assessment). All respite visitors will enjoy delicious and nutritious home made meals, drinks and snacks and you can join in our regular coffee morning with other residents, if you prefer. During your stay, we will continue to support any on-going needs you may have. Respite visitors are able to join outings and activities and if you wish, there are plenty of people to talk to, and a beautiful garden to enjoy. Whatever you choose to do, you can look forward to a relaxing, comfortable day with plenty of attention and interesting company.

This service is free of charge for the respite visitor and their family.
