Ice creams from Tyne Valley Ices

Last week we enjoyed the sunny weather by sitting in the gardens and on the decking of Charlotte Straker House. As a special treat, an ice cream van from Tyne Valley Ices visited and everyone definitely enjoyed cooling off with delicious 99’s, scoops and cones.

Update from Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees

We are very pleased that the government restrictions are slowly lifting to cautiously allow care home residents to enjoy outings and to receive family visitors. As you know our first priority at the Charlotte Straker Project has always been the safety and wellbeing of residents, colleagues and visitors.  With this in mind, we carefully follow guidance issued by Central Government, NHS, Public Health England and The Care Quality Commission in all relevant matters.

We are therefore delighted to be able to update our visiting policy in line with the latest Government guidance, to allow nominated family members to enter Charlotte Straker House to visit their loved ones . We know how desperately upsetting it has been not to be able to hold hands with your relatives so we are incredibly relieved that we are allowed to put steps in place to enable this to happen.

Please click on the link https://charlottestraker.org.uk/covid-19-update/ to read further information including new information documents, including a Frequently Asked Questions section about our current visiting policies.

For a more in depth look at the latest official policy please click here to visit the government website.

Pam and I would like to send our thanks to everyone for their understanding and patience. We are still very well aware of the risks associated with lifting some of these restrictions and you have our promise that we will carefully research all the new advice, and update our policies to ensure that your family members remain safe and well.

As ever, please don’t hesitate to contact the office on 01434 633 999 or click here to email if you would like to discuss any matter in relation to the precautions we are putting in place.

Thank you to our Head Housekeeper

Like all of our staff, Nicola Pick – our Head Housekeeper, works extremely hard at Charlotte Straker.

In recent months however, Nicola has continued to excel in her support of our organisation. Nicola takes her role as Head Housekeeper extremely seriously and prides herself in the personalised approach to the care and attention that she and her team apply to housekeeping here at Charlotte Straker House.

In recent months, she has been pivotal in moving our refurbishment plans forward and to our continued efforts to provide a homely environment to those choosing to make Charlotte Straker their home.

In presenting Nicola with this bouquet of flower, Registered Manager, Pam Crawley said “ Nicola works so hard, is so flexible and is supporting us to drive our home development forward and for these reasons, I wanted to let Nicola know how important she is and how grateful I am to have her as a part of our team here at Charlotte Straker project.”

Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees commented, “Myself and the Board of Trustees would like to add their thanks to Nicola – she is a wonderful member of staff and there have been many occasions where she has gone above and beyond to support our organisation.”

Activities at Charlotte Straker House

We are keen to keep our residents as active as possible and as we focus on gearing activities up safely, our lovely members of staff Kerri and Alice (see photo above!) are ensuring that each resident is receiving one-to-one attention, activities and entertainment. They recently organised a football evening as our residents were keen to watch the Italy vs England match. Although we were all disappointed with the result, everyone had a great time eating the snacks and reminiscing about previous matches, including the 1966 result. Alice and Kerri will be available every day for general conversations, puzzles, reading, writing, manicures etc as well as arranging smaller group activities.

A donation from Tynedale Lions

Stephen Prandle, Chairman of the Lions of Tynedale visited Charlotte Straker House last week to meet with Angela Jones (Chair of the Fundraising Committee) to present our charity with a cheque for £250.

The Lions have always been a staunch supporter of the Charlotte Straker Project and we’re delighted with this recent donation, which will be put towards essential new furnishings in our Respite Care Room.

Our Respite Care Room costs £52,885 per annum and is completely funded through charitable grants and donations. It is in almost constant use as it offers free of charge short term respite care to those who need 24 hour nursing care.

Stephen commented, “We are really pleased that the Tynedale Lions are able to help Charlotte Straker, especially as their respite care is an important core service in the local community.”

Angela Jones added, “Thank you again to Stephen and the Lions – their cheque will be put to very good use, and we are very grateful for their continuing support.”

Our rolling refurbishment continues…

We are busily working our way through our refurbishment program and have recently finished one of our upstairs rooms.
We chose the gold, taupe and amber colour scheme to give the room a cheerful and sunny aspect and to make the most of the views over Corbridge. All the throws, cushions and other soft furnishings were chosen to tone into the decor and make the room as comfortable as possible.
We have a small team who are responsible for choosing the design and decoration of our other rooms – watch this space to see more of our newly refurbished spaces over the next few months.

The Weekly Shop Trolley

Our wonderful volunteer Debbie Thick has been a staunch support and as part of her duties, has been recently managing the weekly Shop Trolley.

The Trolley sells a variety of sweets, toiletries and other goodies and Debbie asks each resident to come out to the corridor to see what they would like to choose. She provides a cheerful presence each week and our residents really enjoy her visits.

We can’t wait to welcome back our other volunteers, who have been patiently waiting until Covid regulations allow them to visit Charlotte Straker House – thank you to Debbie and all those who give their time in many different ways to support our home and charity.

Are you running the Great North Run in 2021?

Our Trustee Maureen Gordon and Chair of the Trustees Berenice Groves have signed up to run this year’s Great North Run. The run is being held in September and is already at capacity but if anyone already has a place this year and is still deciding which charity to support, we’re would be very grateful if you picked the Charlotte Straker Project! We need to raise £30,000 to keep our essential respite care service open for the next 12 months and individual fundraising will definitely help us achieve this total. Our marketing coordinator can help with promoting your fundraising page – please email sally.urwin@charlottestraker.org.uk for more information on how we can support your Great North Run challenge.

Fundraising at the Corbridge Car Boot Sale

Thankfully the rain stayed away and the recent Car Boot sale went ahead at the Tynedale Rugby Club.

Our Crafty Women sold their beautiful hand made items and managed to raise a fabulous £90 to go towards the refurbishment program at Charlotte Straker House.

The Car Boot team allowed our volunteers to hold a bucket collection and they raised an amazing £68.77 for our Respite Care Service.

Thank you to the Crafty Women and our dedicated fundraising team for their hard work – they will be back at the Corbridge Car Boot on June 23rd 2021.
