Margaret’s 92nd Birthday Celebrations

Even though we are locked down, we do our absolute best to ensure our resident’s enjoy their special days.

Margaret Young celebrated her 92nd birthday with a visit from her daughters Ingrid and Yvonne, a birthday cake made by our kitchen team and presents and gifts.

Margaret sat in the dining room by the big window so she could see and hear her family, and there was a lot of laughing and fun.

Happy Birthday Margaret from us all at Charlotte Straker House.

Halloween at Charlotte Straker House

We had a crafts, baking and quiz afternoon with a Hallowe’en theme this year, and everyone enjoyed measuring out ingredients and making buns. Great fun was had! Our residents love baking afternoons, and we’re planning a Christmas mince pie making session very soon.

An afternoon of singing and prosecco

Yesterday our residents did some fundraising themselves by taking part in a “Fundraise for Macmillan Cancer” afternoon. They enjoyed an afternoon of prosecco and some singing by the talented Ruth Boyd. Ruth stood outside our dining room on the decking and sang a medley of well known songs, whilst everyone listened through the windows, sang and clapped along. We also incorporated a music therapy session. Thank you to everyone who took part – the photos below show our residents enjoying the music.

Preparing for Christmas at Charlotte Straker House

Our Activities Coordinator is working hard to prepare for Christmas at Charlotte Straker House, which will be a bit different this year, due to the Covid situation.
We are going to try our best to make sure that we still have a great festive celebration and we’re currently looking at organising (socially distanced) carol singing, Christmas card making, an (outside) visit from Santa Claus, afternoon tea, zoom Church services, a residents’ Christmas fete inside our home, our Memory Tree plus a Christmas party.
We’re all determined that our residents will have just as good a time as they did before the pandemic!
We will let you know exactly what is planned nearer the time, and we promise to take as many photos as possible of all the festive fun 🙂

We have raised over £42,000 for our Isolation Unit Appeal!

Thanks to your generosity we have reached a new total of £42,250 for our Covid 19 Pandemic Isolation Unit appeal. Our Trustee and Treasurer Gordon Parfitt (plus Tallulah the dog!) did the honours and put the new sticker on our fundraising thermometer. The total is slowly but surely rising and is a great testament to the support we are receiving from our local community. Thank you again, and if you have not already donated please go to https://charlottestraker.org.uk/isolationunit for more information on the campaign and the different ways to donate.

Our Round Britain Exercise Challenge is completed, and we raise over £3000

Well done to our Charlotte Straker Team who have COMPLETED their Round Britain Exercise Challenge and raised £3090 for our Covid Isolation Unit Appeal. The challenge involved 33 people, (including all of our Trustees) submitting miles to the general total. It also included members of our care team, who counted their steps during each shift to add to the challenge miles.

The team arrived back in Corbridge after covering 4940 miles which took them around the coast of England, Scotland, Wales and the whole of Northern Ireland. The group actually exercised 6190 miles which means they inadvertently started a second lap….which means on average each person undertook 37.5 miles each week!

The photo shows our current registered manager Marilyn Hunter, and incoming manager Pam Crawley, holding the Union Jack bunting at the finish line at Charlotte Straker House with cyclists John Shaw, Charles Scott and Maurice Hodgson, plus a picture of our Trustees Peter Wood and Angela Jones, all of whom participated in the challenge.
