Adorable Autumn Themed Decor

Our talented residents have been busy crafting adorable autumn-themed table decorations! They chose from vibrant leaves, cozy pinecones, and colourful berries to make gorgeous little candle holders, which are designed to brighten up a table or windowsill. Christine, Margaret, and Joan enjoyed a relaxing afternoon making their own designs and catching up on all the news over afternoon tea and coffee.

Catching the last of the Summer Sun

September has been a very “crafty” month so far! Our residents recently had a lovely afternoon painting suncatchers. These are clear acrylic pieces that are designed to catch the sunshine and reflect it into a room – very important as we head into autumn and winter! Our residents selected from lots of cute designs and were supported to use different acrylic paint pens to colour in their favourites – which seemed to be butterflies and sunflowers. Margaret said, “they’ll look so pretty when they’re hung up against the light.”

The Corbridge Apple Pressing Weekend is BACK for 2024 on 5/6 October!! 🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏

The weekend is organised by the Corbridge Community Partnership (CCP) and all proceeds from the sale of cider and sparkling apple juice made from delicious Corbridge apples, are split between ourselves, the CCP and the Corbridge Youth Initiative.

Our volunteers always help out as much as we can and we’re hoping this year there will be plenty of apple donations and helpers.

  • To donate eating/cooking apples: if you have apples to donate to this year’s charity project please leave them on the veranda at the front of the old pavilion at Corbridge Cricket Club from Monday September 30 onwards up to and including the Community Apple Pressing Weekend on Oct 5 and 6. Please also contact John Maude or Maurice Hodgson (see details below) if you want to donate apples but would like them to be picked by our team.
  • To volunteer on the Community Apple Pressing Weekend: can you spare an hour or two between 9am and 4pm on Saturday October 5 or Sunday October 6 to help? Volunteers are needed to help with washing, pulping and pressing apples to provide juice. No previous experience necessary and teas/coffees available.

If you can help or would like to organise someone to pick/collect your apples please contact John Maude at: johnmaude100@gmail.com / 07791 590814 or Maurice Hodgson at: maurice.hodgson@btinternet.com / 07940 709636

Calling all local Corbridge gardeners!

Are you interested in showcasing your garden in our 2025 Charity Open Garden Event in Corbridge?

Our inaugural event in June 2024 was a huge success, featuring a wide variety of stunning gardens, both big and small, dotted around Corbridge village. We raised over £1500 each for ourselves and the Corbridge Youth Initiative and we’re excited to do it again!

If you’re passionate about gardening and want to share your green space we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to be part of the next Open Gardens event in June 2025, please email our Fundraising Manager sally.urwin@charlottestraker.org.uk and our team will be in touch to organise a chat about your garden.

Colour-Coded Competition: Our Residents Take on a Tasty Challenge!

Our residents had a blast with a unique tasting quiz last week. Our Activities Coordinator Adrienne used food colouring to carefully dye various foods and our residents had to sample each one and guess what food it was. Adrienne made it extra difficult by pureeing each sample so there was no texture to give any clues!

Everyone tried samples including baked beans, strawberries, melon, rice pudding, and mayonnaise. Jackie Kellett, our RGN was brilliant, guessing each food correctly. Nancy tasted the mayonnaise sample (dyed a bright pink) and said, “I know the taste, but I just can’t work out what it is!”. Clare tasted pureed melon and said “I like this one, it tastes a bit like peaches. It’s definitely some fruit.” Christine tried the baked beans (dyed a dark green) and said “I don’t much like this one. It’s savoury but the strange colour means its jolly difficult.” It was fascinating to listen to everyone’s best guesses!

Dorothy’s Birthday Celebrations

Dorothy’s Birthday Happy Birthday to Dorothy! Our carer Zoe helped Dorothy open all her cards and presents, including a beautifully soft faux fur blanket from us all at Charlotte Straker. Dorothy’s favourite cake is a strawberry sponge, so our kitchen team whipped up a homemade one for her special day. We are committed to making sure that every resident celebrates their birthday in their favourite way, and we love to make a fuss of them on their special day. Happy Birthday Dorothy from us all at Charlotte Straker House!

Buenos Dias! Enjoying a Spanish afternoon

Buenos Dias! Our activities coordinator and kitchen team organised a delicious Spanish afternoon for our residents recently. They enjoyed lots of different tapas including Spanish jamon and queso and authentic paella! Accompanied by glasses of homemade sangria our residents took part in a Spanish themed quiz, which raised plenty of memories of previous holidays and trips abroad. Margaret S said, “I love Spanish food, and the sangria reminds me of holidays when I was younger” and Nancy and Margaret G told us how much they loved trying all the different flavours of the seafood and “small plates”. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers – don’t forget to look out for our next themed afternoon – this time from China!
