Young Swimmer Makes a Splash for Charity!

Nine-year-old Freya has shown incredible determination, conquering a mile-long swimathon and raising over £600 for Charlotte Straker House! Freya Jameson, the granddaughter of our domestic assistant Kim Clarke, took on an amazing challenge and swam a whopping 64 lengths of Elswick Pool to fundraise to support our wonderful residents. After her swim she popped along to see her grandma at our Summer Fete and bumped into our VIP guest Brenda Blethyn!

Her mum Joanne Jameson said “I’m so chuffed that Freya not only finished her swimathon but also got to meet Vera! Brenda was so kind, and Freya told her all about her challenge. Freya is a very strong swimmer and she’s always been so ambitious and keen to swim. I’m very proud of her wanting to do this challenge as this is her way of giving back to those who might need a little extra care.”

Freya’s grandma Kim added “after such a long swim, she didn’t seem tired at all and spent another hour playing in the water! I am so proud of her for raising all this money for Charlotte Straker House and everyone in and outside work has been so generous.”

“We are absolutely blown away by Freya’s achievement,” said Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees “She has shown incredible dedication, conquering a mile long swimathon – it’s such an incredible distance for someone her age! Her dedication, kindness, and incredible swimming skills are an inspiration to us all. The £600 she raised will make a significant difference to the lives of the residents we support.”

Our Summer Fete with VIP Brenda Blethyn raises over £4,000!

The annual Summer Fete at Charlotte Straker House was a resounding success, raising over £4,000 for our vital Community Respite Care Bed! The sunny afternoon was made even more special by a guest appearance from Brenda Blethyn, the renowned actress who portrays DCI Vera Stanhope in the hit ITV series “Vera.”

DCI Vera Opens the Festivities

Brenda Blethyn’s visit wasn’t just a fleeting stop. After officially opening the event with a trusty police whistle, she generously spent over an hour mingling with residents and charity stall holders, plus all the hundreds of Vera fans who made the journey to the fete to see her.

Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees at Charlotte Straker House, commented, “ The atmosphere was absolutely electric. Brenda and her production team generously donated her time, mingling with our residents, sharing stories, and signing autographs for her fans. Our residents were particularly thrilled to meet Brenda, especially as she took the time to chat and made sure that everyone got a great photograph. Through the success of stalls, the tea tent, and generous donations, the Summer Fete raised a remarkable amount – over £4,000! This vital sum will directly support our much-needed Community Respite Care Bed. We’re incredibly grateful to Brenda and her team, along with everyone who donated, volunteered, or simply came along to support our cause. Their generosity will make a real difference to the lives of carers in the community.”

Brenda’s Gratitude and a Superfan’s Journey

Brenda told the crowd: “We are delighted to be invited here today, with several members of the Vera team. There’s our executive producer Will, we have our cinematographer Simon, our costume designer Claire and our director Paul. And, last but not least, the person who gets us all to the set on time, our driver Gary.”

Brenda thanked those in the Tyne Valley for their “enthusiasm” and cooperation when they film Vera in the area. She said: “Working on Vera is really, really hard work so it’s so nice to suddenly get a jolly. All the opportunities you give us to come and film here with that juggernaut that is Vera, all the trucks coming along blocking up the street and all sorts, we thank you very, very much for the wonderful cooperation that you give our team.”

Brenda then brought out an old police whistle and said “I’ve brought along with me a police whistle and I’ve been dying to blow it! I will move it away from the microphone so it doesn’t burst somebody’s ears! So, at the toot of this whistle, the fete is open.”

After the event Brenda took to social media platform X to tell her many followers about her day, writing: “We enjoyed the fete at Charlotte Straker house. the residents and guests were so welcoming. What a great day. Thank you.”

Christine Bennett, a “superfan” all the way from Australia, made the special trip to meet Brenda at the Summer Fete. She said “What a wonderful afternoon we had. Just a sprinkling of rain which didn’t deter the public.  Thank you so much for arranging Brenda to chat with me. I can genuinely say I have never met such a lovely, darling lady. Brenda is such a joy and we had a couple of good laughs together. Such a memorable experience for me.”

Celebrating Community Spirit

Berenice added “Brenda Blethyn’s visit added a touch of celebrity magic to an event with a true sense of community spirit. Her presence brought so many visitors and the collective effort and generosity of local businesses, volunteers, and attendees made the event a huge success and created a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brenda Blethyn for her kindness, to the incredible volunteers and community organizations who participated, the local businesses who generously donated raffle prizes, cakes, and essential supplies and to everyone who attended and supported the event. You’ve all helped make a positive difference in the lives of our residents and our community.”

Sweet Caroline Moments with Singer Kevin

Singer Kevin visited us recently for an afternoon of singing and dancing – and everyone had great fun joining in. Residents  had fun clapping along to the music which ranged from the 60s to recent times. One of our favourites was Sweet Caroline and everyone was waving their hands and arms in the air to the chorus and singing along! Thank you to Kevin for such a fun afternoon – we can’t wait to see you again.

Tapas and Sangria in the Sunshine

We are so grateful that the weather has finally become warmer, and our residents are taking every opportunity to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. Last week they enjoyed coffee outside after their twice weekly exercise class, and then a few days later, they took part in an al fresco tapas and sangria tasting afternoon.
Our Activities Coordinator arranged a selection of delicious snacks alongside refreshing jugs of sangria. It was such a change to sit outside in the sun, enjoying lots of different meats, olives and dips – it was almost like being abroad!
(We hope you can spot all our brand new table cloths, crockery and décor – these items were bought with the proceeds of our Halloween sponsored walk from last year!)

Baldy Holly and his pink jacket!

Baldy Holly (who has the best stage name ever!) came to visit us last week for an afternoon of musical hits from the 1950s onwards. He is always very popular singer at CS House. Lots of our residents come to enjoy the music, clap and sing along, and sometimes get up for a dance! Margaret said “I love his pink jacket. He always wears such bright clothes when he comes to see us.” Birgit added “I like the old songs as I can remember them.”  Thank you Baldy for yet another great afternoon – come back and see us soon.

Boost for Local Care: GPs Champion Respite Bed at Charlotte Straker House

We’re thrilled to share that Dr Sally Parkin, a partner at the Corbridge GP surgery, joined us to officially reopen our community respite bed! Senior Care Assistants, Lyndsey Forster and Amy Newell held the ribbon whilst Dr Parkin opened the bed and our residents, trustees and staff celebrated afterwards by enjoying some delicious afternoon treats.

Dr Parkin said “I’m delighted to have been asked to officially reopen this bed. As a local GP, I see many tired and burnt-out family caregivers as well as vulnerable elderly patients who need some extra support. The newly opened bed means that GP surgeries will be able to identify patients and family who might benefit from excellent care at Charlotte Straker House. Affordable respite care is essential, and I’m delighted that our team can signpost patients to this service. It’s not exaggeration to say that this community bed will be a lifeline to many in our local community.”

Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees added “Thank you so much to Dr Parkin for officially cutting the ribbon! We know our GPs are focussed on the well-being of their local community, and their support is essential in encouraging patients and their families to take advantage of our respite service. We also know that more than half of unpaid carers in Northumberland are providing over 60 hours of care a week and have not had a break in the last twelve months. We’ve already been inundated with enquiries about respite care so we’re incredibly grateful for Dr. Parkin’s support and to everyone who helped make reopening this respite bed possible.”

Our community respite bed offers short term free of charge respite care to those over 65 years of age from Northumberland. For more information and to book please call 01434 633 999 or visit https://charlottestraker.org.uk/respitebed/

Our free of charge bed offers short term free of charge respite to the elde   rly in our community and was shut in 2023 due to the rise in costs after Covid. We have managed to reopen the service due to a generous legacy donation.

The community bed costs our charity over £60,000 each year and is entirely funded by donations and grants and we receive no local authority support. Please help by donating – https://charlottestraker.org.uk/donate/

Carer Louise is walking the Wall for Charlotte Straker

We’re incredibly proud to announce that our very own care assistant, Louise Richardson is taking on a monumental challenge to raise money for our residents.
On 20th June this year Louise will be attempting to walk the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall – that’s a whopping 84 miles – in just 24 hours! She will be leaving Wallsend very early on Thursday and plans to arrive at the western end of the Wall very late on Friday 21st June. She told us “I’ve worked at Charlotte Straker House for a short while, but I’ve seen how important our charity is to our residents. My sister told me she was doing the Hadrian’s Wall Walk and I decided it was a great opportunity to raise funds – I want to raise money for the newly opened community respite bed and activities for the residents. It will definitely be hard work to walk all that way in 24 hours but I’m already training and I’m just praying for good weather!” We will definitely be cheering Louise on every step of the way!

Singing along to Evita at the Tyne Theatre

Our residents enjoyed a thrilling trip to the Tyne theatre last week to see a wonderful performance of the Evita musical by the West End Operatic Society.

They were captivated by the music, costumes, and the story and loved the iconic songs (especially “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”) plus the dazzling costumes and sets. Some of our residents commented that it brought back memories of seeing a show at the West End in London.

Margaret said “it’s a lovely, traditional theatre and our seats were very comfortable. I enjoyed the show very much.”

Colin added “What a fabulous day! I enjoyed the glass of wine especially and thank you to everyone.” Muriel added “I loved the music”, whilst Ernie said “I loved the part of the show with the military men in it. It reminded me of when I was in the army.”

Berenice Groves, Chair of our Trustees said “I was delighted to accompany our residents – outings like these are an important way to enrich their lives. It was a joy to see the smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the performance. Thank you to our sponsors Cynthia and Paul Davison for generously funding our trip, plus the staff team, volunteers and the bus drivers who made sure we arrived safely!”
