The History of Newcastle

Our volunteer Peter Wood popped in to give us a very interesting talk on the history of Newcastle city centre last week. He had designed a fascinating presentation about different areas in the city and the history behind them. Peter had also brought along some photos and books from the Discovery Museum plus a wonderful hand stitched embroidery map of the centre of Newcastle. Margaret chatted about working on Grey Street, whilst Margaret G sang a song she remembered about Sandgate. Everyone had their own memories of the city and loved seeing old photos of the Northumberland Street shops from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Thank you to Peter for creating such an interesting talk – he will be back with another presentation on the bridges of Newcastle – we’re looking forward to it!

Strike! Our residents enjoyed Ten Pin Bowling at Hexham

We all enjoyed an outing to the bowling lanes at the Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham. The bowling staff helped us set up the lanes so all our residents could have a go. Margaret said “I love bowling. I think I’m quite competitive.” As the games progressed, there was lots of friendly banter. Some residents managed full strikes and the staff all had a go as well. For Colin, the outing was a refreshing change of pace. “I never thought I’d be bowling at my age, but it’s been great fun,” he said. “It’s nice to get out and try something new.” John and Colin were over the moon to win special trophies for the bowling competition – check out their smiles below!

Belle the therapy dog visits our residents

Thank you to Tonia Urwin and her beautiful spaniel Belle who regularly visits our residents. Belle is a professionally assessed @WAG therapy dog and is a massive favourite with us all at Charlotte Straker House. She is so well behaved and friendly and loves all the pats and strokes. She met lots of different residents and visited the less mobile in their rooms. Birgit said “her ears are so soft and fluffy.” And Nancy told us that “I used to breed dogs, and I do miss them. But Belle is very beautiful.” WAG is a visiting dog charity befriending older dog lovers in care or in hospitals across the North East of England – more details can be found at their website https://wagandcompany.co.uk/

Isobel’s Day Care Birthday!

Isobel is a lovely lady that visits Charlotte Straker House for our Day Care Service. She celebrated her birthday with us last week and loved the gifts we gave her and cards. Isobel has told us she enjoys our day care service very much, especially the home-made lunches, and the opportunity for a chat with our staff and other residents. She also loves our afternoon activities such as the crafting sessions and visiting musicians – and the delicious coffee and home baked goodies!
She’s pictured alongside Jayne, our Activities Coordinator. If you would like more information on our day care services please visit https://charlottestraker.org.uk/daycareservice/ or call 01434 633 999

Springtime with St Andrew’s Church

We have many wonderful links with the local community and one of the most important is our connection with St Andrew’s Church in Corbridge. We’re delighted that we can offer a monthly in-house church service at Charlotte Straker House which is led by Bob and Jo Eldridge from St Andrew’s. Several of our residents choose to take part, and enjoy a bible reading, hymns and a discussion. This month it was all about Spring and the chance of growth and a chat about what it means to our residents. Thank you to Bob and Jo for visiting each month and providing such an important service for our home.

Our Parkinson’s exercise class is going from strength to strength. Led by Karen Dover (our very own “Mrs Dovernator”) the class includes gentle exercises and fun games to help strengthen muscles and improve coordination. Thanks to a grant from Parkinson’s UK, we have our own exercise equipment including hand weights, resistance bands and oversized footballs. Non-residents are welcome to join us (cost per class is £7 per head) and can book the next class (date to be confirmed) by calling 01434 633 999.

Our Latest Testimonial – “What a Wonderful Organisation”

Our latest testimonial: from Sophie, niece of recent respite resident Margaret D.
“My aunt needed emergency respite accommodation last year after a fractured water pipe caused a flood which brought a ceiling down. Charlotte Straker came to the rescue and my aunt stayed with them for five months.
I want to thank everyone there for their care and kindness, not just to my aunt, but also to me. When I first made enquiries all the office staff were so helpful, kind and patient with me. It was such a stressful time for me and this kindness meant a lot. I met Pam and Sam then, who were also so reassuring and kind. Sam visited my aunt at the neighbour’s house where my aunt was staying and really put my aunt at her ease.
When my aunt moved to Charlotte Straker she was taken through an assessment by Mary the nurse, who again was so patient and helpful with both my aunt and me. Throughout my aunt’s time there, every time I visited I was met with smiles and friendly greetings from all the staff, inside and outside the building. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. I met Christian several times, also Ian and Mary again, I know my aunt became very fond of them and I can see why.
I am so grateful to everyone at Charlotte Straker – what a wonderful organisation you are, we are lucky to have you.”

Spring has Sprung: our residents visit a local garden centre

On a sunny day in February, we visited the Azure garden centre in Cramlington to a look at the Spring season’s plants and vegetables and browse their gardening gifts and outdoor furniture. John said, “there’s a very good choice of bulbs, and all the different types of daffodils”. Muriel said, “I can’t wait to sit in our garden in the warmer weather.” Eileen and Nancy told us that they really enjoyed lunch in the café and had a great day out. Thank you to our volunteers and staff for accompanying our residents on this trip – it helped remind us that Spring is only just round the corner!

Singing and Dancing with Kev and Andrew

Singers Kevin and Andrew visited us recently for an afternoon of singing and dancing – and everyone had great fun joining in. Residents Arthur, Margaret, Muriel, John, Peggy and Birgit had fun clapping along to the music which ranged from the 60s to recent times. It was a great exercise session, especially when we started waving our hands in their air! Thank you to Kevin and Andrew for such a fun afternoon – we can’t wait to see you again.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year with dragon dancing

We celebrated Chinese New Year this week and the beginning of the Year of the Dragon with a delicious lunch, a special dance by our Dragon (led by talented care assistant Saka and the nurses Jackie K and Ian D!) and traditional Chinese music. Peter said, “that was really fun to watch”, and Muriel added “who is that under the dragon? I love the dancing!”

Everyone was clapping and laughing as the Dragon danced in and out of the tables to Chinese music. The dining room was decorated in the “lucky” New Year colours of red and gold and the kitchen team served a very yummy Chinese banquet.

Margaret said, “I’ve always loved a Chinese food and this was lovely.” Thank you to our staff for being such a brilliant dragon and the kitchen team for their tasty new year menu.
