Thank you to Kerri for her role as COVID Coordinator

Kerri was presented with a bouquet of flowers yesterday by our Registered Manager, Pam Crawley, as a small token of appreciation for her commitment, dedication and all round approach to her role.

Kerri, in her role as COVID coordinator and Infection Control Champion, has been pivotal to Charlotte Straker’s efforts in combating and heightening awareness of COVID -19 throughout the pandemic. Her responsibilities included delivering key training to staff and visitors alongside oversight of all aspects of the COVID strategy.

Pam Crawley, Registered Manager said “Kerri’s work in her role as COVID coordinator has been nothing short of fantastic. Kerri is so well thought of by all of the team, by residents and by relatives alike. Her reassuring presence, “can do” attitude, knowledge and skill are to be admired. Through the pandemic, where times have been extremely difficult, she worked with positivity, determination and resolve. Kerri’s presence will be missed from her COVID coordinator role, but as we now emerge from the pandemic however, we now move with confidence to managing COVID risk without the need to have this dedicated position. We are however, so very lucky to have Kerri within the Charlotte Straker team, where she now returns to her role as a Senior Care Assistant and as Infection Control Champion on night duty. I simply cannot thank Kerri enough for her support in all that she has done and continues to do.”

Our Christmas Big Night Out 2022

Eighty people gathered on a very rainy night to celebrate the 2022 Christmas Big Night Out on Saturday at the Corbridge Parish Hall. Hosted by the Corbridge Youth Initiative and ourselves, the revellers enjoyed a three course buffet meal, one of Bill Cunningham’s fiendish photo quizzes and dancing to music from Tapestry. The hall and tables were beautifully decorated with festive lights and the substantial raffle was made up of some very generous prizes from Corbridge traders and villagers. Over £1,300 was raised, to be split between the Charlotte Straker Project and the Corbridge Youth Initiative.

Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees said, “thank you to all who worked so hard to make Saturday night such a success. The food, dancing and company was fabulous and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves. One aspect of the night stood out to me personally – the wonderful warm welcome given to our new Ukrainian neighbours and how much they joined into the spirit of the evening. Thank you to all those who donated raffle prizes, those who helped set up and clear away and all our hardworking volunteers. The whole event was an inspiring example of the young and older members of the Corbridge community working together to organise an excellent fundraising night.”

Mini Horse Magic comes to Charlotte Straker

Katy Smith from K L Pony Therapy visited Charlotte Straker House last week, and brought some “mini horse magic” to our residents! A tiny chestnut Shetland pony called Cartier visited residents and even travelled upstairs in our lift to meet those who are unable to leave their rooms. Katy owns eight therapy ponies and said “our visits are designed to be very tactile, calming and soothing and our ponies are specially trained to meet people, and love the attention”. Our residents adored little Cartier and even those who were a little unsure soon enjoyed patting and talking to the tiny pony. Dorothy said “he is so small and I love his soft coat.” Sandra said “Oh he’s adorable! And so good about being inside.” Jessie wasn’t too keen at first but when Cartier came a little closer, she couldn’t resist stroking his mane and nose. Pam Crawley, Registered Manager added, “it was wonderful to see Katy again and Cartier the pony. These therapy sessions are lovely as our residents absolutely love stroking and talking to the pony and chatting about the animals that they’ve owned in the past. The fact that Cartier will calmly visit bedrooms is a huge bonus, and the visits especially helps those who are bed bound, or have poor mobility and eyesight.”

Massage Therapy with Jodie

Jodie is a member of our care team and is also a fully qualified massage therapist. She has many years’ of experience in different types of therapies including Swedish massage, Indian head massage and lymphatic drainage and she now offers relaxing shoulder, neck, hand and leg massage to our residents. Jodie has always wanted to introduce therapies into a care home setting to introduce relaxation for the residents in the comfort of their own home. The therapies promote relaxation by using light, sweeping strokes to help relax and release muscle tension, which is very important to those residents experiencing aches, pains and joint stiffness. Jodie carries out the massage wherever is most comfortable: in their rooms; or (as you can see by the photos) even outside – wherever the individual is most relaxed. Muriel absolutely loves the sessions and says “it is absolute bliss. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it, and it makes me much less achy afterwards.” Colin says “oh it’s a dream, just so relaxing and I almost drift off to sleep. It’s wonderful to be taken care of.” Alan, who is pictured enjoying a leg massage says “she’s a lovely lady and so gentle. And we have a good chat too”. Jodie is definitely a favourite. Thank you to her from all the senior team – being able to combine her caring and massage expertise means that Jodie is constantly in demand and being kept very busy!

Thank you to Corbridge Middle School!

Corbridge Middle School contacted us last week to ask if we would be interested in their surplus stock of unopened visors, gloves and Covid tests. We were very grateful to receive the donation of big boxes full of equipment and supplies, especially as PPE is a continued additional expense to our organisation that does not receive funding.

The photo shows Kerri Smith, our Covid Link Coordinator with some of the PPE.

Thank you very much to the school team for thinking of us and their generous donation – it is very much appreciated!

Our Residents and Remembrance Day

Remembrance Sunday always means such a lot to our residents, so we organised a walk down to the centre of Corbridge village to show Jessie, Muriel and Margaret the touching displays of Remembrance poppies around St Andrew’s Church.

Margaret said “it was beautiful weather and it was lovely to be able to sit outside and see how the poppies were made and displayed. They were very cleverly crafted and the flood of poppies outside the church wall were beautiful. I can’t wait to visit the village again, especially if it’s as warm and sunny as last time.”

Many of our residents had family members that served in the forces, or were members themselves and everyone is very keen to mark Remembrance Day. As well as a church service at Charlotte Straker House, we held a minute’s silence, listened to our residents’ recollections and memories of World War 2 and previous Remembrance Days, and watched the broadcast from the Cenotaph in our communal lounges.

Jessie and her beautiful cushion!

Our resident Jessie has always been a very keen crafter and seamstress. Recently she finished a lighthouse themed cross-stitch tapestry which we helped turn into a gorgeous pale blue cushion. Jessie is 98 years’ old and still loves stitching and making beautiful crafts. We’re so pleased that Jessie is able to continue with the hobbies she loves so much – and we absolutely love her new design!

Our New Clinical Support Lead

Cheryl Kennedy is a Registered Nurse who has joined our Senior Management Team as our Clinical Support Lead. Cheryl completed her nursing training in 2012 and has worked in different roles, including acute care, hospice and elderly medicine. She told us that “I have always had a passion for palliative and end of life care. As nurses we cannot change the outcome but we can affect the journey for our residents and their families. For me, nursing isn’t just a profession – it’s a passion for caring for people. I strive to show the residents the same kindness and compassion I hope others will show to my loved ones.”

Pam Crawley, our Registered Manager added “I am delighted that Cheryl has joined us as part of our senior management team. In her new role Cheryl will be responsible for clinical oversight of the service through both working as a part of the team and through line management responsibilities for our nursing team. She is key to the development of practice across both the care and nursing teams at Charlotte Straker House.”

Ernie celebrates his 91st birthday

Ernie celebrated his 91st birthday recently, with a specially made chocolate birthday cake, cards and presents. Ernie is one of our much loved residents, who is a retired army officer, loves the outdoors, and can often be found sitting in our gardens enjoying the sunshine and fresh air and chatting to visitors and staff members. He enjoyed opening his presents (including a gift of a very smart polo shirt from the Charlotte Straker team) as well as other cards and presents from his family and friends. Ernie told us that he enjoyed his birthday and had a great day – and that he can’t believe he’s 91! Happy birthday from us all at Charlotte Straker House.

Our New Remembrance Garden

We held a special Remembrance Service this month to commemorate all those residents and staff members who passed away at Charlotte Straker House during the early months of the Covid pandemic. We were honoured to welcome Mrs Rodrica Straker, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland who officially opened a new Remembrance Garden in the grounds of Charlotte Straker House, plus the Rev. David Kennedy who blessed the garden as part of the commemorative service.

Berenice Groves, Chair of the Trustees gave an introductory speech, and Vicky Hogg, a member of the care team read a poem called “Farewell my Friends”, before Mrs Straker unveiled the new plaque in the Remembrance Garden.

Berenice commented, “On behalf of our all our trustees, I would like to thank all those who came to share in our service of reflection and remembrance. We’ve had a lot of discussions on how to pay tribute to our much loved residents and staff and we hope everyone will agree that this new flower garden is a simple and beautiful way to remember their lives. Thank you to the Rev. Kennedy and Mrs Straker who joined us at the service, and the relatives, residents, families and volunteers who helped us commemorate their loved ones and the sacrifices everyone made during the dark days of the Covid pandemic. I hope that the new garden will offer a space for peaceful reflection and help people remember the feelings of love and support that they received from our staff and the wider community, and their continued care and attention that continues to help us all today.”

The Covid pandemic has also had had a serious and significant impact on our residents and staff, as well as curtailing our fundraising opportunities, so we are currently trying to raise funds to maintain our core services. We are 30 successful years in operation as Charlotte Straker Project, such a special charity to be involved in. You can donate to our fundraising appeals at www.charlottestraker.org.uk/donate/
